2013 Look Up Lodge Summer Camp Staffers

Hello lovely people,

We’ve been hearing from former Summer Staffers about what it’s like to spend 4 months of a year pouring yourself out for the sake of the gospel at Look Up Lodge Summer Camp. If you’d like to hear from ChristaBeth, Will, Eleni, or Andrew, just click their name. If you’re ready to hear what three-time Summer Staffer Ward Yount has to say, here it is:

What does it mean to be a summer staffer at Look Up Lodge? That might be the hardest question to answer.

Being a summer staffer means being tired, working harder than you’ve ever worked before, and doing stuff you just don’t want to do. It also means that you get the opportunity to love on, laugh with, cry with, and share Jesus with hundreds of kids and teenagers in a summer. On top of all of that, a summer staffer at Look Up gets to be a part of the best community that I’ve ever experienced as a believer. There is nothing like walking through life, working for the Lord, laughing and crying together for three months. You just can’t get that anywhere else.

Why work at Look Up for the summer? Well, you can’t get what you get at Look Up anywhere else. I wanted to work at Look Up so that I could pour into kids in the way that a summer staffer poured into me. I got that opportunity, but more than just pouring into other people, I experienced a season of growth during each summer that I’ve spent working at Look Up that is hard to compare or explain. There are hundreds of stories that I could tell about being a summer staffer at Look Up, but I’ll stick to just a few for the sake of this space.

Look Up Lodge Summer Camp Staffer Ward Yount Summer Job

Ward Yount teaches campers at Look Up Lodge Children’s Camp in 2013

I’ll start with a story about a middle school camper, Will, my first week ever as a summer staffer. He stops me about 3 days into camp and asks to chat. Our conversation ends up being about how He doesn’t know what it means to think of God as his Heavenly Father because his real dad was never around. We talked for over an hour about what God is like and how He is our Heavenly Father. Three years later, Will and I talk regularly and I hear about how the Lord continues to teach him what it means to be God’s son.

Another story involves a high school camper named Jesse. Jesse was clearly the outcast of his youth group and just seemed different. The last night of camp that week Jesse and I had a conversation about his life and that night he came to know Jesus in a real and personal way. It was incredible.

I could share countless stories about children under the age of 10 understanding the Gospel in a real way or teenagers being willing to fight the sin in their life and strive towards what God calls them to do. Working at Look Up is such a blessing every day.
